AI for data analysis - how it works
When people think about “AI tools for data analysis” or “AI data analytics,” most immediately picture AI chat for conversational analytics. While this is the most popular way GenAI is currently used in analytics, there are other use cases as well:
- AI agents for data notebooks
- AI agents for semantic modeling
- AI agents for building data pipelines
However, these latter use cases are primarily targeted at enterprises and mature data teams, rather than individuals or early-stage startups. Therefore, for this article, we will focus exclusively on free AI analytics tools for conversational or self-serve analytics.
The AI analytics tools landscape
In 2026, the AI analytics market is growing rapidly and is on track to become as large as the AI coding market—if not larger. The landscape is highly fragmented, with dozens of startups competing to become the “Cursor” or “Lovable” of analytics.
As a result, there are no well-established categories yet. That said, for lightweight tools with generous free tiers, the market can be roughly divided into four buckets:
- AI data analyst tools – position themselves as replacements for human data analysts, offering visualization, reporting, and sometimes semantic modeling and data governance.
- AI spreadsheets – live inside Excel or Google Sheets, or provide a standalone spreadsheet-like interface, enabling standard operations via AI chat.
- Text-to-SQL tools – focus on a single core capability: translating natural language into SQL queries.

How free are free AI analytics tools?
AI analysis is a token-intensive process, so most companies impose monthly usage caps. As a result, there are almost no truly free AI analytics tools on the market today. Some companies, like Wren AI, offer a significant number of credits, but usage is limited to the first month. Others, like Livedocs, provide a fixed number of credits that do not renew monthly.
However, several products offer enough free credits to cover ad-hoc analytics needs for individuals and small startups. Below, I’ve selected tools with the most generous free tiers in each category.
Free (ish) AI analytics tools
AI data analyst tools
Fabi AI is a “full-stack” AI analytics tool that offers 25 free AI requests per month, with credits renewed monthly. This includes both an AI agent for self-serve analytics and one for data notebooks, which more technical users may appreciate.

MindsDB is the only open-source tool on this list. The downside is that it doesn’t provide free credits, but engineers can connect a wide range of LLMs and pay the lowest possible cost per token.

Querri is a lightweight AI analytics tool with a generous free tier: 30 queries/ month for business users and 50 queries/month for users in the education sector.

Airbook is another lightweight AI analytics tool that offers 10 free AI requests per month.

AI spreadsheets
Shortcut acts as a plugin inside Excel, with an AI chat overlay. Its free plan includes a generous allowance of 30 daily credits.

Quadratic is an AI spreadsheet that combines traditional spreadsheet functionality—such as formulas and charting—with full code support. It includes limited AI usage, though the exact limits are not specified.

Truffle Pig is another AI spreadsheet tool that integrates directly into Excel, allowing users to chat with an AI agent while referencing spreadsheet context. It offers a free tier with limited usage.

Text-to-SQL
Vanna AI is one of the more sophisticated SQL agent tools, offering integrations with popular databases and access controls. Its free tier includes 5 questions per day.

TalktoData is a lightweight text-to-SQL tool that provides 10 messages per month and limits usage to three CSV uploads.
